Hospital Transportation Policy

Robert Morris University’s Department of Public Safety will transport students to Sewickley Valley Hospital for mental health related matters and for those who do not have life threatening injuries or illnesses. In addition, trained athletic personnel are permitted to transport student-athletes to the hospital, physician appointments, and therapy sessions. All other university personnel, including student employees, are not permitted to transport students to the hospital from RMU facilities.

Students who require transportation to the hospital may call the RMU Department of Public Safety at (412) 397-2424. The Department of Public Safety personnel will make a determination to transport the student or call for an ambulance. In the case of mental health related matters, Public Safety will transport students when requested by a University staff member, unless the Public Safety Officer determines it is not safe to do so. Students who require transportation back to RMU from Sewickley Valley Hospital may contact the Department of Public Safety to request transportation.

The local ambulance provider, Valley Ambulance Authority, offers students who have medical insurance coverage an annual membership for $30.00 a year (August to August). In the event that an ambulance is called, Valley Ambulance will transport the student to the hospital and bill the student’s insurance company. Valley Ambulance will accept the payment coverage authorized by the student’s insurance company as long as the student is a member and the insurance company deems the service medically necessary. Students should check with their health insurance provider to determine the coverage available. Students can enroll at www.valleyamb.org (on the left side it will show subscribe now and the RMU rate).
