Robert Morris University is committed to equal opportunity for students with physical or learning disabilities and does not discriminate on the basis of disability in admission or access to or treatment in its programs and activities. Qualified students with a disability are eligible to participate in any part of its program or services. To this end, Robert Morris University shall provide reasonable accommodations unless it would constitute an undue burden or would require a fundamental alteration of the institution's program. Reasonable accommodations include academic adjustments, modification or alteration of course examinations and the provision of auxiliary aids. Students with disabilities who have questions regarding their rights are encouraged to contact the coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities. Students with physical or learning disabilities that require accommodations are asked to adhere to the following procedure. 
  1. Identification and Registration - Once a student has been admitted to the University, she/he should identify herself/himself and register with the coordinator/assistant coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities. The student is encouraged to start preparing as early as possible as some accommodations may require significant planning in advance of the semester.

  2. Documentation - A student requesting reasonable accommodations must provide appropriate documentation and then participate in an assessment interview. The guidelines for documentation of physical and learning disabilities will be provided in the interest of ensuring that evaluation reports are appropriate to document eligibility and support requests for reasonable accommodations. Staff from Services for Students with Disabilities are available to consult with students and evaluators regarding these guidelines.

    The University does not provide nor pay for services rendered to meet the above documentation requirements. In order to ensure that services and accommodations are matched to the student's changing needs, students must provide documentation that is no more than three years old. This may require that students undergo reevaluations if their previous evaluation was more than three years ago. Comprehensive testing is not required for a reevaluation. A student need only be retested for his/her previously diagnosed physical or learning disability. The issue of what specific retesting is required is left to the discretion of the student's physician or other qualified evaluator. If the student's physician or other qualified evaluator determines that retesting is not necessary, that individual should write to Services for Students with Disabilities stating the reasons for that determination. Retesting that is not medically necessary will be waived.

  3. Assessment Interview - At the assessment interview, the coordinator/assistant coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities and the student will discuss the student's special needs and will tentatively agree upon accommodations.

  4. Agreed upon Accommodations - After the initial assessment interview has been conducted and if necessary, the results discussed with the appropriate academic dean, the coordinator will put into writing the agreed upon accommodations. Copies of the written accommodations will be made and a copy will be forwarded to the appropriate academic dean. The remaining copies will be given to the student for distribution to faculty members.

  5. Student's Responsibilities - It is the student's responsibility to distribute the accommodation sheets to the appropriate instructors as soon as possible. Failure to distribute accommodation sheets may cause delay in the provision of services. The student must also keep a copy of the accommodation sheet for his/her records and deliver a copy of this form to his/her academic advisor.

  6. Questions - Any questions that a faculty member may have regarding accommodation sheets should be addressed to the coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities or the faculty member's department head.

  7. Accommodation Arrangements - Services for Students with Disabilities will work in conjunction with faculty members and the student to make arrangements for accommodations such as ordering taped texts.

  8. Continuing Needs - A continuing student whose accommodations may vary from semester to semester must meet with the coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities well in advance of the beginning of each semester to agree on which accommodations are appropriate for that semester of course work. A student needing a semester-by-semester update of accommodations will have this indicated on her/his accommodation sheet. It is the student's responsibility to request this appointment and to do so early enough to allow for the processing of the accommodations.

  9. Grievance Procedure - Students with disabilities who have any complaints, including, but not limited to, complaints regarding a request for accommodations are encouraged to use the student grievance procedure outlined in the student handbook.
