FYSP Mentor Position

First-Year Seminar Program Mentors are chosen based on their enthusiasm, attitude, past leadership accomplishments, ethical conduct, and their ability to be a role model. The process begins in the fall each year when the mentor applications are made available in the Center for Student Success to interested students. Applications are returned with two references from faculty and/or staff members who are able to provide a reference based on the criteria below. The student must also interview with the Center for Student Success staff.

Qualifications:
  • Maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Good academic and judicial standing
  • Completed mentor application with resume
  • Complete Diversity 101 & 102 sessions by the end of the Spring 2016 semester
  • New Mentors ONLY- Two recommendation forms completed by RMU faculty/staff members
  • New Mentors ONLY - Attend one information session (see dates below)

Mentor Information Sessions:  (Required of NEW Mentor Applicants)

No more information sessions will be held for the 2016 application process.  Please contact the Center for Student Success if you have any questions.

Responsibilities:
  • Attend and participate in the First-Year Orientation Program
  • Attend and co-teach all scheduled seminar sessions
  • E-mail class weekly and carbon copy your instructor
  • Participate in a community service project, serving as the site student leader
  • Organize and attend all-freshmen social activities
  • Arrange for at least two out-of-class meetings with each student in your seminar section
  • Attend weekly meetings with your assigned instructor
  • Attend weekly group mentor meetings
  • Complete weekly mentor logs

  • Receive mentor certification from nationally recognized organization (College Reading & Learning Association)
  • Fulfills the Leadership category of the Student Engagement Transcript
  • Receive stipend pay (increase in pay each year served as a mentor)

This form can be completed electronically, saved, and emailed to center4success@rmu.edu or delivered to the Center for Student Success in hard copy form.  REMEMBER:  You must include your resume with the application.
